Indian food and its diversity

India is a land of great diversity, whether we talk about language, religion, cultural traditions or attire, our country has been known for its varied traditions, cultures and habits since centuries. All across the world, Indian food is famous for its diverse tastes. The difference in cuisines and food habits all comes because of the diversity in its soil, climate, culture and occupations. 

Do you know there are around 30 regional cuisines in India, each with a history that goes back 5000 years or even more? 

If we discuss in detail, then North Indian food is quite different from South Indian food, while East Indian Food is totally unique from West Indian food. In fact, all the states and union territories have their own typical cuisine that gives us the flavour and taste of each states unique ingredients, spices and cooking methods. 

Whether we speak about the beautiful valley of Kashmir or the mesmerizing backwaters of Kerala, all Indian states and union territories share one thing in common and that is their love for food and good taste. 

Let us look at the various cultures and the type of food that is quintessential to them:- 

1) Bengali Food - 

Bengali food is appreciated for the generous use of the five essential spices in its cooking. The five spices are mustard, fenugreek seed, cumin seed, anise seed, and black cumin seed. The specialty of Bengali food lies in the perfect blend of the sweet and spicy flavors of these ingredients. 

2) Gujarati Food – 

We all know that traditional Gujarati food is primarily vegetarian and has high nutritional value. The typical Gujarati thali consists of varied kinds of lip-smacking dishes that are nourishing and healthy. 

3) Goan Food – 

Goan cuisine is highly influenced by the Portuguese culture. The dishes cooked in traditional Goan households have a sweet and sour flavour. One of the most famous curry from this western part of the country is the Vindaloo curry, which is popular because of it being a beautiful blend of sweet and sour flavours. 

4) Maharashtrian Food – 

Maharashtrian Food is usually a mixture of North Indian and South Indian cuisine. It tends to be a bit spicy and one of the most popular dishes is the Vada Pav. 

5) Punjabi Food - 

The cuisine of Punjab has an enormous variety of mouth-watering vegetarian as well as non - vegetarian dishes. The spice content ranges from minimal to pleasant to high. This is one cuisine that is relished by all communities. 

6) Rajasthani Food - 

The cuisine of Rajasthan is primarily vegetarian but has some delicious non-vegetarian dishes too. It offers a fabulous variety of mouthwatering dishes. The spice content is quite high in comparison to other Indian cuisines, but the food is absolutely scrumptious. 

7) South Indian Food - 

South Indian Food is known for its light, low-calorie appetizing dishes because the traditional food of South India is mainly rice-based. The cuisine is famous for its wonderful mixing of rice and lentils to prepare yummy lip smacking dosas, vadas, idlis and uttapams. This is one cuisine that is thoroughly enjoyed and relished by people of all ages. 

One of the major factors that can help us to differentiate between the various types of cuisine available in our country, is the use of spices. Indian Food does not depend only on a single spice, instead there are various different types of herbs that are used to prepare these dishes.
